Organization & Navigation

We use three different “information perspectives” to organize topics on our site, so you can select the most suitable one each time.

Our topic organization and navigation also make it very clear where topics fit in the larger IT picture, which helps tremendously with understanding how IT works.

We do this with:

  • Tag Groups
Topics by IT concept, such as Software Development, Quality Assurance, etc.
  • Job Profiles & Term Lists
Information by IT Job, including indexes with links to key IT Terms and Tools
  • Function Layers
Topics organized by IT area, like the Job Profiles and IT Dictionary sections

Please read more about each one in their respective section below.

Tag Groups & Index

Tags are a handy tool for assigning topics into “families” of related items and a standard practice on many information sites.

We use Tag Groups for every IT topic on this site but go further than is typically the case. In addition to assigning one core Tag that connects the topic to one logical IT concept, we also assign more Tags when possible.

When doing so, we purposely use tags with angles of view that range from “narrow” to “wide angle”. For example, the Microsoft .Net Developer topic is part of the Microsoft .Net, Microsoft Technologies, and Software Development Tag Groups.

We put the Tag Groups link first in the menu, as many users may want to start their browsing using the intuitive IT concepts that each Tag Group represents. As you navigate the Tag Groups Index page, please consider whether you want a narrow or more broadly defined topic family!

Job Profiles & Term Lists

Many users will interact with IT Professionals who have a specific role. We provide clear Job Profiles to describe the essence of their work, along with the tools and processes they use to get their job done.

For example, if you are working with a Quality Assurance specialist on User Acceptance Testing for a new system, our Job Profile for that QA role will provide a practical overview of their work.

As a future Premium Membership Feature, we will go one step further with Job Term Lists, which provide handy “cheat sheets” of typical terms and tools associated with an IT job and links to the related topics in the IT Dictionary.

So, if you want to quickly look up several typical topics for a Java Developer job, the Term List for that IT role is your “one-stop” dashboard. We organize IT topics this way because listing all relevant and common IT topics by IT Job is a practical approach for organizing this information.

Check out our Job Profiles section for quick insights into how IT Professionals do their work!

Function Layers

We use a “Function Layers” approach to organize topics in the Job Profiles and IT Dictionary sections. These represent a breakdown of a “typical” IT organization into pieces you can intuitively understand.

The IT Functions represent seven core IT responsibilities that you find in all large IT organizations. The “Layers” are essentially sub-functions within these IT Functions that break things down further.

For example, Security Solutions is an IT Function with Security Management and User Access Management as its two sub-function Layers.

In the Job Profiles section, we use the core IT Functions to organize IT Jobs into logical categories. In the IT Directory, we utilize the complete set of IT Functions and Layers for the best clarity on where topics belong.

We discuss the full details of our Function Layers in the IT Overview and IT Functions pages!

Conclusion

Tech Job Terms is a unique IT information site that can help anyone expand their understanding of IT.

To accomplish this, we provide clear information, an intuitively organized site structure, and powerful options for navigating all topics!
