General Questions

Who is this site for?

We created this site for anyone who wants to understand how IT organizations work and how technology fits into the modern workplace.

Our content is particularly relevant for people who interact with IT professionals or are involved with IT projects, including:

  • Business Professionals and Managers
  • HR and Talent Acquisition Specialists
  • Technical and IT Recruiters
  • Business School and MBA students
  • Anyone curious about how IT works

If you work alongside IT teams or simply want to expand your IT knowledge, this site was built for you.

Why not just use Google?

Google is great for finding a quick answer to a single question, but it is not designed to help you build a broader understanding of IT over time.

Search engines return fragmented results from many different sources, with varying levels of detail, accuracy, and relevance. You get one answer at a time, with no consistent structure, no connection between topics, and no context for how everything fits together.

Tech Job Terms is very different: all content is written specifically for non-technical business professionals, organized around a consistent IT framework, and designed to show how IT components relate to each other.

The result is a learning experience that search engines simply cannot replicate — one that helps you build real IT knowledge rather than just finding isolated facts.

What does Membership include?

Members enjoy access to all content and all site features on Tech Job Terms.

For content, this includes:

  • All IT Terms beyond the Core Function and Key Concept topics
  • All IT Tools topics for Biz tools, Dev tools, and Ops tools
  • All Vendor profiles for Major, Mid-level, and Minor / Niche providers
  • All Job Profiles for Tech Jobs, IT Management roles, and Certifications

We plan to expand this collection to more than 1,000 topics across these areas.

For features, this includes:

  • Topic Collection filters in the Library sections and all individual Topic Collection pages. These enable you to easily use “filters within filters” and quickly see very precise results.
  • Full-content search with on-page highlighting of matching text. This makes it easy to find precise information across the entire site.
  • An AI Assistant (coming soon) that is fully trained on our content. This will serve as an interactive Guide to help Members find answers and explore IT topics, all grounded in our curated content.

Visit the Membership Benefits page to learn more about what’s included.

Why is Membership currently free?

We are currently in an early access phase as we continue to expand our content library toward our goal of 1,000+ topics.

During this phase, full Membership access is available at no charge. Once we reach a solid content milestone, we plan to charge a monthly fee that reflects the value of the Tech Guide and covers the platform’s ongoing operational expenses.

If you create a free account now, you can enjoy full Member benefits during this period and stay informed as the platform evolves.

Will you send a lot of email?

No — we keep email to a minimum and only send notifications that relate directly to your account.

These include subscription reminders before your renewal date and notifications if you open a ticket on our Helpdesk portal. We do not send marketing emails, newsletters, or promotional messages.

Your inbox is yours — we only reach out when it genuinely matters.

Navigation & Search Questions

How do I find a specific topic quickly?

The fastest way is to use the Title Search bar, which delivers live results as you type and is available on every page of the site.

If you are browsing one of the Guide pages — IT Concepts, Quick Lists, or Tech Jobs — you can also use your browser’s Control-F function to instantly search and highlight any text across all topics on that page. We designed those pages with that in mind.

For Members, the Content Search feature extends this capability across the full Library, with on-page highlighting of matching text.

Between these three options, you can locate almost any topic or phrase in seconds, regardless of where it appears on the site.

How does Control-F search work on Guide pages?

The Guide pages, including IT Concepts, Quick Lists, and Tech Jobs, each use an “all on one page” format, meaning all topics are loaded and visible on a single page at once.

We include some key topic information on each card on these Guide pages, which makes your browser’s built-in Control-F search function particularly powerful here.

Simply press Control-F on your keyboard, type any word or phrase, and your browser will instantly highlight every matching instance across all topics on that page. On a Mac, use Command-F instead.

It is a fast and familiar way to find and compare relevant topics without any additional tools or features.

Why are the topic filters such a useful learning tool?

Most reference sites let you search for a topic only by name, via an alpha index, or by a limited set of very high-level topic areas. In contrast, our filters let you explore IT as a structured field rather than a collection of isolated facts.

Every Tech Job Terms topic is classified by Main IT Function and Function Area, Topic Type, Tech Level, Access Level, and video availability. Each one is also linked to four or five Topic Collections, so you can filter within subject areas.

As you filter and browse, the short summary on each topic page gives you just enough context to quickly assess relevance and build connections across topics. Constantly shifting between these perspectives — zooming in on a specific area or zooming out to see the broader picture — is one of the most effective ways to build genuine IT comprehension over time.

Content Questions

What information and topics are available for anyone?

A large portion of Tech Job Terms is freely accessible without membership or a login, including:

  • The IT Overviews and Function pages
  • The IT Concepts Guide and all linked 170+ topics
  • All Quick Lists with key terms and tools by job and topic
  • The Tech Jobs Guide for exploring IT job specializations
  • All topic definitions and summaries in the four Library sections
  • All articles in the Tech Talk section.

This unique collection of IT information is organized, connected, and written specifically for non-technical readers.

What is the “Topic Index” area that shows on topic pages?

The Page Index provides a structured preview of the Member content available on each topic page.

For each topic, such as an IT Term, Tool, Vendor, or Job Profile, we cover the five most important aspects you should know.

The Page Index lists these five aspects by name, giving you a clear sense of what the full topic covers before diving in.

It is a handy way to quickly assess whether a topic is relevant to what you are looking for.

Can I suggest new topics or content?

Yes, we welcome user suggestions and want the site to reflect the questions and topics that matter most to you.

You can submit content suggestions through our Contact Us page. If you are a Member, you can also open a request directly through the Helpdesk / Support page on your Account page

If you have an idea for a new IT term, tool, vendor, or job profile you would like to see covered, we would love to hear it.

We also publish articles in our Tech Talk section on interesting IT topics, trends, and insights. If there is a subject you would like us to explore there, feel free to suggest it through the same channel.

Usage Tips

Where should I start if I am new to the site?

We recommend starting with the IT Overviews section, which explains the eight primary IT Functions and the 27 Function Areas that form the foundation of IT organizations.

From there, the IT Concepts Guide gives you a visual overview of the most essential IT topics, and all linked topics are publicly available.

Once you have some topics in focus, the Quick Lists Guide can provide handy one-line reference lists for key terms and tools by job and topic.

Together, these three sections provide a solid IT orientation in a short time, and the Library sections are ready whenever you want to explore any topic in more depth.

What is a good way to build IT knowledge over time?

The most effective approach is to explore IT topics from multiple perspectives rather than looking up isolated facts one at a time.

Topic Collections are designed specifically for this purpose. They bring together all related topics for a subject area, with perspectives that range from narrowly focused to wide-angle. Actively using the filters to zoom in and out across different Topic Collections helps you see how IT components connect and builds a much deeper comprehension than any single search could provide.

Over time, this layered exploration is what turns basic familiarity with IT terms into genuine IT knowledge and a stronger IT Edge.

How do I use this site to prepare for meetings with IT teams?

The Quick Lists Guide is your best starting point for meeting preparation, as it is designed exactly for this kind of focused, time-efficient lookup.

If you know the general topics to be discussed, the systems or software under consideration, or the types of IT roles involved, a few targeted Quick Lists can give you a solid grasp of the key terms and tools in minutes. Each list provides concise, one-line descriptions that are easy to scan and quickly retain.

You can also keep the site open on a mobile device during the meeting for live lookups, as a discreet way to stay on top of unfamiliar terms as the conversation unfolds, and the mobile menu also includes the Title Search box.
