Site Structure

We use three different “information perspectives” to organize topics on our site, so you can select the most suitable one each time.

Our topic organization and navigation also make it very clear where topics fit in the larger IT picture, which helps tremendously with understanding how IT works.

We do this with:

  • Subject Areas Dashboard & Pages
Topics grouped into major subjects, such as Software Development, Quality Assurance, etc. Subject Areas include related items from across all sections.
  • Organizational Function Layers
Topics grouped by the Function and Layer area in which they fit in the IT organization. We use these in the IT Terms and Job Profiles sections.
  • Job Profiles & Term Lists
Information by IT Job, including indexes with links to key IT Terms and Tools. We provide standard IT Job profiles, as well as in-depth ones for common roles.

Please read more about each one in their respective section below.

Subject Areas

We use tags to assign every topic to one or more major IT Subject Areas, which function as “families” of related items.

When doing so, we purposely use angles of view that range from “narrow” to “wide angle”. For example, the Microsoft .NET Developer topic is part of three core concepts: Microsoft .NET, Microsoft Technologies, and Software Development.

The main menu includes a link to the Subjects Ares dashboard page, so you can directly locate items by topic family.

As you navigate the Subject Areas page with the Level filters and the Search box, please also consider whether you want a narrow or more broadly defined topic family!

Function Layers

We use a “Function Layers” approach to organize topics in the IT Dictionary and Job Profiles sections. These represent a breakdown of a “typical” IT organization into pieces you can intuitively understand.

The IT Functions represent seven core IT responsibilities that you find in all large IT organizations. The “Layers” are essentially sub-functions within these IT Functions that break things down further.

For example, Security Solutions is an IT Function with Security Management and User Access Management as its two sub-function Layers.

We discuss the full details of our Function Layers in the Intro to IT and IT Functions pages!

Job Profiles & Term Lists

Many users will interact with IT Professionals who have a specific role. We provide clear Job Profiles to describe the essence of their work, along with the tools and processes they use to accomplish their tasks.

For example, if you are working with a Quality Assurance specialist on User Acceptance Testing for a new system, our Job Profile for that QA role will provide a practical overview of their work. If the role is a common one in IT organizations, we may provide an In-Depth version that covers more aspects of that job.

To go even further, we offer our unique Job Term Lists, which provide handy “cheat sheets” of typical terms and tools associated with an IT job and links to the related topics in the IT Dictionary.

So, if you want to quickly look up several typical topics for a Java Developer job, the Term List for that IT role is your “one-stop” dashboard.

We organize IT topics this way because listing all relevant and common IT topics by IT Job is practical for organizing this information.
